Monahans-Wickett-Pyote Independent School District is located in the city limits of Monahans, Texas, on Interstate 20, approximately forty miles west of Odessa, Texas, and covers 837 square miles in Ward County. Monahans has a population of approximately 6,821, while Ward County is estimated to have a population of 10,909.
Monahans’ primary economic base is petroleum. With the upswing of oil prices and the demand for oil-related support services, the economic base has begun a steady climb over the past year.
The school system consists of three elementary schools, one junior high campus, and two high school campuses. A total of 1911 students (Superintendent’s report) attend
M-W-P ISD. A staff of 312 professionals, para-professionals and support staff are employed by the district.
The 2008-2009 school year will begin in newly remodeled facilities at Cullendar Kindergarten and Sudderth Elementary. The stadium, field house, and sports complex including the pool also have been upgraded during the past year and a half. The district will continue to provide quality education in quality facilities for the students, parents and community. Progress will continue this year as the district remodels Tatom Elementary, which is scheduled to be completed in the fall/winter of 2008. Planning is underway for new classroom facilities for Monahans High School.
The student population consists of 40.2% Anglo, 52.1% Hispanic, 7% African-American, .4% Asian/Pacific Islander, and .4% Native American. (AEIS 2005-06).

| Goal 1: | Based on accountability ratings determined by the Texas Education Agency, the Monahans-Wickett-Pyote Independent School District will improve to the next level of ratings or maintain exemplary status on individual campuses and district wide. | |

Texas law grants the board
of trustees the power to govern and oversee the management of the district’s
schools. The board is the policy‑making body within the district and has
overall responsibility for the curriculum, school taxes, annual budget,
employment of the superintendent and other professional staff, facilities, and
expansions. The board has complete and final control over school matters within
limits established by state and federal law and regulations.
The board of trustees is
elected by the citizens of the district to represent the community’s
commitment to a strong educational program for the district’s children.
Trustees serve without compensation, must be registered voters, and must reside
in the district. Current board

The Board usually meets the
third Tuesday of the month in the Board Room of the Administration Building. In
the event that large attendance is anticipated, the board may meet at the Walker
Junior High cafeteria. Special meetings may be called when necessary. A written
notice of regular and special meetings will be posted at the Administration
Building at least 72 hours before the scheduled meeting time. The written notice
will show the date, time, place, and subjects of each meeting. In emergencies, a
meeting may be held with a two‑hour notice.
All meetings are open to the public. In certain circumstances, Texas law permits the board to go into a closed session. Closed session may occur for such things as discussing prospective gifts or donations, real property acquisition, certain personnel matters including employee complaints, security matters, student discipline, or to consult with attorneys regarding pending litigation.
