Athlete
honored at annual sports banquet
by Dave Poynor, Staff Writer -- Monahans News -- May 11, 2004
Over 300 parents, athletes, coaches, and supporters celebrated the 20003-2004 MHS athletic year at the annual Lobo Sports Banquet last Monday.
Top honors were presented in all sports except football, with each varsity coach awarding team MVP honors as well as special efforts, or Big 'E' awards.
Laura Crumrine was presented the top honor for girls, The Monahans News Female Athlete of the Year award. The annual selection goes to a senior female multi-sport athlete, and Crumrine placed her name on the plaque for her outstanding accomplishments in volleyball, basketball, and track.
One big highlight of the evening was Coach Patty Dominguez' honoring of the state runner-up Lobo volleyball team. Dominguez called every player to the stage to list their achievements.
Another big moment was the naming of the second annual Nathan Swarb Scholar Athlete award. This honor, based on multi-sport athletes who excel in the classroom, went to a popular winner in Whitney Mitchell.
The final award of the night, the Todd Larned Award, went to Rachel Miller and Matt Walsh. The Larned award is chosen by the Lobo Booster Club for effort above and beyond the call, and for citizenship, sportsmanship, and classroom accomplishments.
Coach Amy Wilson was the lone varsity coach to not present her awards, deferring to the end of their softball playoff season.
The awards ceremony, though nearly three hours long, is an important part of the program, according to Athletic Director, Larry Hanna.
"It went real well," he said. "I sense a new pride in our kids, and it was evident that night. They pulled for each other and appreciate the athletes that won.
Thanks to these wonderful people!!!
The All Sports Banquet is decorated by the MHS Cheerleader and Sponsors: Mrs. Kellye Riley, Mrs. Foydell Mitchell, and Mrs. Kim Ashbrook -- the programs were created and provided by Mrs. Rivera's Desktop Publishing Class and -- the photographs used for table decorations are taken by Dr. Bill Davison and printed by Jordan Sellers and Emily Moser, Mrs. Gaule's Webmastering Class.
