Patty Dominguez named Volleyball Coach of the Year
by Jon Fulbright, Monahans News, July 23, 2004Special to The Monahans News Monahans Loboes head volleyball coach Patty was honored earlier this month as Coach of the Year in volleyball for 2003-04, at the Texas Girls' Coaches Association All-Star banquet.
Dominguez is the daughter of Erasmo and Suzie Acosta of Pecos. She played for the Pecos Eagles under her aunt, Nora Geron, form 1981-83. She later served as assistant coach for the Eagles under Geron and has been the head coach for Monahans for the past seven seasons. The Loboes advanced to the Class3A state finals last November before falling to Wimberly.
"The committee met back in November to select the All-State team, and the nominees were selected at the point," Dominguez said. "I received a letter a couple of weeks ago I was nominated for the small school award.
Dominguez' award covered Classes A through 3A. She said former Seminole coach Kirby Jamison, now at San Antonio Choate, won the award for the Class 4A and 5A schools.
"I'm very excited. It's a great honor," said Dominguez. "We were just honored to get a letter, much less the award."
She credited the work of her assistants, Becky Hix and Becky Melius, during the past season, when Monahans won the District4-3A title and then took the Region I-3A championship.
"Becky Hix was down there for the All-Star game. We had one player, Laura Crumrine, in there, so she was down," Dominguez said. "She and Becky Melius were there with me and they allowed us to do our jobs. I couldn't have won it without them."
Monahans' state trip was their first in eight years. The Loboes graduated Crumrine, but returned District 4-3A Most Valuable Player Brittany Hughes and five other players. They will be favored to win the title in the new District 3-3A, which for the next to seasons in volleyball will only include the Loboes, Pecos, Fort Stockton and Presidio.
"We've got six coming back, and three were on the court consistently, so I've got a good base too build on," she said.
