Monahans Holds on for wild win
Odessa American November 10, 2004
Lubbock Monahans High School's volleyball team teetered on the brink of elimination Tuesday night before coming back for a stirring 18-25, 25-18, 10-25, 25-20, 15-18 victory against Canyon in a Region I-3A quarterfinal play-off match.
The Lady Loboes (32-10) are seeking their third consecutive trip to the UIL State Tournament, but had to go five games for the second straight outing on the 2004 postseason.
"This was another good test for us," Monahans head coach Patty Dominquez said. "We've had three good (matches) in a row now, against hard teams to block against and hard teams to attack against. It's a real good confidence booster for us."
Prior to the playoffs, Monahans lost a three-game practice match against 42-0 Windthorst, a perennial Class 1A power.
Then in the area round Saturday, the Lady Loboes went five games for a victory against Dalhart.
Now by beating Canyon, they earned another trip to Regional I-3A Tournament. The Loboes open the Regional Tournament at 5:45 p.m. Friday against Graham at Lubbock Christian University's Rip Griffon Center.
It didn't look promising after game 3, which Canyon won 25-10.
"We went back and started talking about what Canyon did to get to that point" Dominguez said. "It wasn't that they were putting the ball on the floor. It was we were making mistakes and we weren't getting the block positioned right. It was just all the little details and they were able to score all those points."
