Challenged Library Materials

Challenge Process

A District employee, a parent or guardian of a District student, or District resident may challenge library material maintained in the District's library program. Email your school librarian or school principal if you have concerns or questions about an item in your child’s library program.

Informal Reconsideration

When the District or a campus receives an objection to the appropriateness of a library material, the appropriate librarian or administrator shall try to resolve the matter informally. The librarian or administrator shall explain the selection process and discuss the intended purpose for the library material.

The librarian or administrator shall offer a concerned parent or guardian an alternative library material to be used by the child in place of the material and, if requested, shall restrict the child's access to the material objected to by the parent or guardian.

If the individual wishes to make a formal challenge, the administrator shall make available to the individual a copy of the policy and the form to request a formal challenge of the library material.

Formal Reconsideration

All formal objections to library materials shall be made on the MWPISD Library Materials Challenge Form and must be submitted to the Administration Office (606 S. Betty, Monahans, TX  79756)

When a challenge form is submitted, the form shall be provided to the Superintendent, the school librarian and the principal.  The form shall be provided to the campus challenge committee no later than the fifth work day after the written challenge is received.

The campus’s challenge committee must make a recommendation for action no later than the 90th day after the committee receives the challenge.

The school shall prohibit student access to challenged library material until the district takes action in response to the challenge.
